The Galician company Grupo Chévere, with 30 years of experience, wants to find out whether the immense oil slick that led to the sinking of the Liberian oil tanker Prestige off the Galician coast in November 2002 was something more than an ecological catastrophe, based on the robust social, political and cultural commitment that defines the group.

November 2002. The Prestige, yet another old oil tanker loaded with heavy fuel, put out an SOS in the midst of a fierce storm 28 miles off of Cabo Fisterra. For six days, it was towed around aimlessly, pouring its cargo into the sea, and on the seventh day, it sank to a depth of more than 3,000 metres. Wave after wave of oil slicks reached the coast of Galicia. Yet again. Yet another catastrophe. After the last day of the month, thousands of people who managed to listen to the sea in the midst of that nightmarish silence imposed on the waves by the thick, black sticky oil called chapapote cried out in unison ¡Nunca Máis! (Nevermore!).
March 2020. We are looking in history for a new show, and the state of alarm is declared. Shortly thereafter, at the worst points in the COVID-19 pandemic, given the dearth of resources, some hospitals on the Galician coast issue a desperate cry to find out if anyone has still held onto materials from the Prestige. Suddenly, thousands of gowns, goggles, gloves and face masks used to combat the oil slick blossom. They were still being saved. For when the next one comes. But this time it didn’t come by sea. It doesn’t stain. It doesn’t stink. But the gowns are still needed, because we suspect that the culprit is the same. We wonder what connects the two events.
April 2020. Someone tells us that an unopened box has appeared with materials from the lockdown that a group of activists from the Plataforma Contra a Burla Negra (the Nevermore! platform) held in the Casa da Cultura in Laxe, a hamlet on the Costa da Morte (Galicia), between 25 and 30 November 2002, just one week after the Prestige sank. It is the black box of the catastrophe.
January 2021. We manage to open the box and have no choice but to explain what we found inside it, even if it doesn’t help us understand what connects the two events.
