Sonic Identity

Monuments are ‘structures erected to commemorate a notable person or event’ usually in a public space. They stand, or are supposed to stand for the values of the society as well as for authority. Monuments are heavy, physically and mentally. They perform power and principles. Are monuments even possible in the world where we want to question and get rid of centralization of power and wealth? Or can we find new ways to cherish our values and make them sharable? What are the monuments we want to build today?

Sonic Identity workshop will explore the idea of a monument as a possibility to create space for memory, presence and dialogue; in a way that proposes a critical look on our system of values and hierarchies, making invisible things visible. The workshop seeks to question the common conception of a monument, attempting to invert the categories mentioned above. We will investigate fragile and precarious monuments as societal and cultural agents maintaining or triggering debates and fostering communities, monuments rather as triggers for future activation than manifestations of the past.

We will build on existing live sound-walks undertaken by Arrels Fundació with homeless people in Barcelona. Those walks invite small groups of audience to be taken to a tour in the city, guided by citizens living in the street, revealing their forms of identity and privacy which are woven into the public urban area. The workshop will inquire forms to make those walks available to a wider audience, independent of personal guides, using methods from the arts, architecture, performance and cooking.

Paying tribute to the vulnerable situation of the workshop theme and investigation at stake, and furthermore in respect to the involved personalities, this third workshop at Teatre Lliure will consist in the development of concepts, agendas and possible trajectories how such a platform could be developed and established in the future. Each proposed sketch should be accompanied by a fragment which will be implemented and accessible to the senses.

Working on interwoven threads of sensory experience of personal narratives in relation to the urban space, and specifically the collision between private and public space, we will raise questions and try to accentuate distinct aspects of our societies. We will give silent voices to the ones we tend and try to ignore and forget.

The workshop, as in previous editions, will feature university students from various disciplines (music, cooking, scenery, design...) and will be conducted in collaboration with Arrels Fundació.

At the foot of the stage

The Teatre Lliure launches the Màster de Construcció i Representació d’Identitats Culturals (CRIC) of the Universitat de Barcelona (UB) seminar At the foot of the stage. Led by researcher Adriana Nicolau, the Teatre Lliure becomes the object of study for 15 students who, throughout the season, will make an immersion in all aspects of the theater’s programming. This call is open to students of the CRIC, doctoral students and the Teatre lliure general subscribers and Generació Lliure, to deepen the analysis of the scenic proposals, the artistic processes of the theater and the Teatre Lliure model of programming. This seminar is part of the collaboration that the Teatre Lliure began last season with the UB in the creation of the Premis Teatre Lliure - UB d'Estudis de Teatre Contemporani. This season’s awards ceremony will take place on November 24, 2022.

TEACHER
Adriana Nicolau Jiménez, PhD in performing arts from the UOC with the thesis Feminismes al teatre català contemporani (2000-2019) (Extraordinary Doctorate Award). For some months she has been developing her research on Catalan theatre and affections as a post-doctoral researcher Margarita Salas at the University of Barcelona (ADHUC Research Centre). He also writes about theatre on platforms such as El Temps de les Arts, Caràcters, Núvol and Red Escénica.

Theatre on doctors orders

This season, the Lliure and the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya (UOC) continue with the study on the benefits of theater in people with mild cognitive impairment. Both institutions explore the confluences between health and culture through pioneering research in Catalonia. The study, coordinated by the doctor and professor Salvador Macip, is carried out in collaboration with the ’Hospital de Sant Pau. Patients are monitored with assessments before and after attending theatrical shows, creative processes and a training activity around the performing arts. The first results of the study will be released and shared by the end of 2022.

Polytechnic Challenge

The Teatre Lliure is working with UPC Arts of the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya on creating a group (preferably consisting of students from various academic disciplines related to the UPC) which we will be inviting to study all the activities at the Teatre Lliure in Montjuïc and its character as a theatrical, educational and cultural meeting place during the first six months of the season. They will not only be spectators of the end result of this activity: they will also obtain in-depth knowledge of the building, its plasticity and how it interacts with the people who work in it (artists and workers), those who visit it (audiences), those who live directly with it (its neighbours), and those for whom this venue is part of the cultural or civic imaginary. This analysis focuses on a "theatre of the future" in the format of a design-thinking workshop, which will take place over a week at the beginning of the second half of the season. The workshop will provide the prototype of a Lliure of the future that provides the best answer to the broad and cross-disciplinary concept of accessibility, and not only in an architectural or urban sense.

In parallel to the Polytechnic Challenge, we are inviting students at the UPC to take part in the restoration of the model of the Agriculture Hall by Fabià Puigserver. This will be a public restoration that could be part of the Montjuïc installation-exhibition in the 22/23 season, focusing on this headquarter of the Teatre Lliure. The activity begins in February 2023.
