This is the third part of a trilogy by Anne-Cécile Vandalem about the failure of Western civilisation, now experienced by children in the Siberian taiga.

Following Tristesses (2016) and Arctique (2018), This Belgian director's tells the story, based on real events, of two brothers who are disgusted by civilisation, and happily settle down in the Siberian taiga with their families and children. But even this paradise cannot last for very long: they are soon possessed by distrust, jealousy, and greed, which lead to conflict, confrontation, and destruction. A parable about the impossibility of living in peace from the perspective of children: born into a world devastated by adults, the future must be built on a ruined utopia.

Anne-Cécile Vandalem founded Das Fräulein (Kompanie) in 2008, and her most recent plays are Tristesses (Théâtre de Liège) and Arctique (Théâtre National de Belgique), which were invited to the Avignon Festival and the FIND at the Berlin Schaubühne. She has also produced sound and multimedia installations and performance projects in public spaces.

WHAT PRESS SAID

"This is the story of a failure, of a Rousseaunian dream that clashes with the realities and hardness of nature, with hostile cousins, disturbing poachers. A dream that clashes with the human constants that we will always find, of all time and even on the other side of the world, wherever we go. [...] The staging and in particular the remarkable sound and musical accompaniment of Vincent Cahay and Pierre Kisling creates throughout the piece a permanent tension, an oppressive anxiety and anguish, an atmosphere that says more than words. [...] We will remember the moving and nuanced interpretation of the performers and, in particular, that of the four children who do not seem to play a role, who naturally live their childish lives with freshness and spontaneity, as the two dogs -Ice and Oméga- who live their life on stage without restrictions. It’s still like a feeling of not being in the theater and magically observing this family as they live life and their torments in a desolate corner of Siberia." Le bruitduoff tribune - Jean-Louis Blanc

"The staging of Anne-Cécile Vandalem uses ‍all possible modalities of the scenic device to restore the murky beauty of the impossible community and the atmosphere of the Taiga'. The camera captures the intimacy of the family unit. It captures the fears, the things that are not said, the madness of the beliefs that are taken for real. To these scenes of interiors filmed at the height of children are added or opposed scenes of dreamlike or violent exteriors. The music composed by Vincent Cahay and Pierre Kissling feeds the scenography of sound elements in echo. Crackles in the branches, crackles of vegetables, snaps of blinds thicken the material of what is shown. The game of actors, all excellent, make live the terrible mechanisms that contribute to the disaster." M La Scène - Marie-Laure Barbaud
